We received 92 applications for the 2008-09 class of the Hedwig van Ameringen Executive Leadership in Academic Medicine (ELAM) Program for Women.  The applications came from 62 schools of medicine (including two Canadian schools), 9 schools of dentistry, and 3 schools of public health. 
 
Ten institutions (2 SOM, 5 SOD, 3 SPH) have never before had an ELAM Fellow:

Of the 74 institutions submitting applications:

Seventeen applicants applied previously to ELAM, including four who were Alternates last year.  Thirteen applicants identified their ethnicity as non-Caucasian or “other.”

The candidates’ credentials included 62 MD/MbBs/DO/MD, PhD, 7 DDS (or equivalent), 15 PhDs, 1 Dr.PH, 1 ScD;1 VMD, 8 department chairs and 14 vice/associate chairs; 1 associate vice president, 1 assistant provost, and 15 vice/senior associate/associate/assistant deans.

Since its inception in 1995 and including the current application cycle, the ELAM Program has had Fellows from 112 U.S. medical schools (88% of U.S. medical schools) and from 32 U.S. dental schools (57%), as well as 4 Canadian medical schools (24%), 4 U.S. schools of public health, and 2 U.S. osteopathic schools.  ELAM Fellows and alumnae continue to play an important part of the applications process.
