SELAM is committed to grow, advance, promote and sustain women as executive leaders in academics, industry, government, and other top positions.  Collaboration and networking among its members and an array of experienced national leaders are essential to achieving common goals, to know what's happening in these changing times, and how to meet emerging challenges with skill, deftness, and boldness. The 2010 SELAM Summit is also designed to welcome women in senior leadership roles within their specialty professional society that may benefit from the resources of the SELAM community.

2010 SELAM Award of Excellence Recipient Announced

Each year SELAM International presents Awards for Excellence to two individuals who have made outstanding contributions to the development and promotion of women leaders in academic health professions.  This years recipient being honored at the SELAM Reception during the 2010 ADEA Conference is Huw F. Thomas, B.D.S., M.S., Ph.D.Dean, School of Dentistry at the University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB).

Huw F. Thomas received his B.D.S. (Dental Degree) from Guy's Hospital, University of London, England in 1975.  In 1978, he received a Pediatric Dentistry Certificate from Eastman Dental Center, Rochester, NY and M.S. (Dental Research) from the University of Rochester, Rochester, NY.  From 1978 - 1980 he was appointed as Assistant Professor, Department of Pediatric Dentistry, at the University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio.  In 1980 he moved to the University of Connecticut Health Center, Farmington, CT where he received his Ph. D (Biomedical Sciences) in 1986.  From 1980 - 1992 he held appointments as Assistant and subsequently Associate Professor in the Department of Pediatric Dentistry, University of Connecticut Health Center.  From 1992 - 2003 he was Professor and Chairman, Department of Pediatric Dentistry at the University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio and held additional appointments as Professor, Department of Pediatrics and Department of Cellular and Structural Biology. He was appointed Dean, School of Dentistry at UAB in January 2004.
